Encounter with “Tricki”
The story begins when the author saw a dog named “Tricki” with his mistress on the street. The author was shocked to find him growing so much fat. He looked like a bloated sausage with a leg in each corner. His eyes were red and moist and his tongue hung out his mouth.
Food that was given to “Tricki”
His Mistress, Mrs. Pumphrey, found him lazy and tired always. She thought that giving him extra food might boost him up. So, she gave him some malt and cod liver oil. She also gave him a bowl of Horlicks at night to make him sleep.
She even gave him sweets like cream cakes and chocolates as he was fond of them.
Conditions deteriorated for “Tricki”
When the author had an encounter with “Tricki” he asked his mistress to do a few things. He told her to follow a strict diet for him. He also asked her to make him do a lot of exercises. Mrs. Pumphrey seemed very obedient as if she would execute everything as said.
Maybe she did maybe not but Trick’s condition deteriorated. He refused to have his favorite dishes and besides he started vomiting. Tricki seemed to lay on the rug all day and pant. He was reluctant to do anything all day.
The author told Trick’s mistress that the only way to save his life was to admit him to the hospital. He was a veterinary surgeon and thus knew what he must do to save the dog. Thus, he took him in his car and carried him to the hospital.
Condition at “Tricki’s” house
As the dog was given a lavish lifestyle all his housemaids were deeply attached to him. Mrs. Pumphrey assumed that the dog will surely die and broke into tears.
They all made ready his day bed, night bed, favorite cushions, toys and rubber rings, breakfast bowl, lunch bowl, and supper bowl. The author carried nothing with him, which disheartened them a lot.
At the surgery
When the author took him to the surgery Tricky lay motionless on the carpet. The other dogs sniffed him and found him an uninteresting object and ignored him.
The author made his bed in a warm loose box. For two days he just gave him plenty of water to drink with no food. On the second day, he started to look around the surrounding.
On the third day, Tricky softly cried on hearing other dogs in the yard. As the author opened the door Tricky joined them after being inspected by them. Later when the other dogs had their meals Tricky watched them having food and after they finished just licked their bowls.
The next day an extra bowl was kept for him. He pushed himself towards the bowl and enjoyed his meal. After this, he started to recover with time. He needed no medical treatment it was his lifestyle that was changed. His lavish life with extra food made him reach that condition.
He had to fight with the other dogs for his food and hunt rats at night. Tricki enjoyed his new lifestyle. He was the new member of the gang who was bowled over, tramped on, and squashed.
Mrs. Pumphrey was very much worried and thus called the author about a dozen times each day. When she heard that he was recovering fast.
She started to send two dozen eggs each time for Tricki to grow strong. The author and his partners started to have those eggs for breakfast. Later she started sending wine to enrich his blood. This time author’s household enjoyed them with lunch. Finally, brandy came for Tricky and they used it to finish their day luxuriously near the fire.

Although it was luxurious to keep Tricky with the author, he knew that Mrs.Pumphrey was distressed to miss her pet. He made her a call and asked her to collect Tricki.
Within thirty minutes she arrived at the place. She trembled and asked the author whether Tricki was fine or not. The author assured her that he was fine and told her to wait as he brings Tricki.
Tricki had turned to a muscle-toned animal who looked graceful. He was keeping up well with the pack. He could stretch up a good degree with his chest touching the ground.
As soon as he saw his mistress he jumped from the author’s lap to her lap. Tricky licked her and barked at her.
They returned back and as the car moved she looked out of the window and thanked the author and called it “a triumph of surgery.”
